Do people really want a 4" screen? Personally, that's just too small for me because I use the phone for video and other things. The smallest I'd go would be 4.7" display now days.
  • mkaibear - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

    Yes.

Lots of people want a 4" screen on their phones. These will sell like hot cakes.
  • danbob999 - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

these will sell like hot cakes despite the 4" screen. People would have preferred a larger screen, but being the cheapest iPhone, a lot of people will buy it.
  • shabby - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

I think the correct phrase would be that lots of people want a compact phone, unfortunately apple can only squeeze a 4" screen with large bezel's on its phone. Samsung could easily make a 4.5" edge in the same size, but i doubt they would sell it that cheap. Honestly i'm surprised apple is selling it that cheap.
  • jospoortvliet - Tuesday, March 22, 2016 - link

Yeah, the Sony Xperia 3 Compact had a 4.6" screen in a barely larger phone (6 mm wider, 3mm higher).

I guess this phone should be called the Trump Phone, both because he happily puts his name on any crap he has actually nothing to do with and because his tiny fingers will work well with a small keyboard. I bet Apple is counting on him winning the election and tiny hands and fingers becoming hip :P

Apple doesn't actually want the SE to sell that well. That's why they've only used a 4 inch display. It's also why they've kept with the 5/5s body.

They are targetting a specific audience. They want holdouts with the iPhone 5s and earlier who either don't want a bigger iPhone or can't afford one/don't want to shell out for one. They also want Android switchers who are moving into the iOS ecosystem and don't want to spend top dollar straight away. They also want a more affordable phone for market share grab in developing countries such as India (maybe the low end in China too).

They absolutely do NOT want any potential 6/6 Plus and 6s/6s Plus buyers. Because inevitably, this $399 phone has lower margins than the larger ones and so Apple wants a select audience to upgrade/move further into the Apple ecosystem without hitting the big buyers at the top of the Apple food chain.
  • Alexvrb - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

I feel that 4.2-4.3" with a slimmer bezel would sell even better.
  • Shadow7037932 - Tuesday, March 22, 2016 - link

These are going to sell because it's the "budget" iPhone. If this had a 5" screen with the same price it would still sell like crazy.

Many people want a phone they can operate one handed, those with smaller hands cannot operate a 4.7" phone one handed.
  • Ryan Smith - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

Even with big hands, I'm not sure I'd call it pleasant. That top-left corner is a stretch to get to

Except, smartphones aren't measured by their screen size. Especially when a 5.1" Galaxy has almost the same dimensions of an iPhone 6, yea it's a tiny bit larger, but Samsung really nailed the design it's even easier to handle than the iPhone 6.

I got the GS7 Edge, my brother got the GS7 standard, my other brother has an iPhone 6S and my friend's wife has a 6S+. We were in a gather the other night and it's absolutely striking how much smaller my 5.5" Edge is compared to the 6S+. The 6S+ is alarmingly unwieldy for its screen size. And to our other surprise, the GS7 standard seriously felt smaller than the iPhone 6S........

You'll get exactly what you want if Apple lets go of those huge bezels on the 4.7" model. 4" is too small for any modern usage of a smartphone. Apple needs to go back to the drawing board. Their designs are nice, but too huge for the screen size they provide.
  • radar86 - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

Wow are we not the lucky ones since we are receiving input from a real life cell phone design engineer - NOT!

So Apple is stupid and out of touch with their customers but somehow has been the #1 selling high end smartphone maker since day 1 and they collect 94% of all smart phone profits (http://appleinsider.com/articles/15/11/16/apple-in...

Yeah Apple needs advice from you since they do not not know they are doing.
  • lilmoe - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

    Bad day?

But just to add more sarcasm to your silly comment, they really are stupid. When they were preaching that 3.5" - 4" 3 years ago, myself and a handful of other "cell phone design engineers" challenged other iPhone fans that a bigger iPhone would sell better, but not much to our surprise people like you laughed us off. Guess what........

Here's a million $ idea for new features in the future: water resistance, SD card support (with workable file system) and a mini-iPen for their plus model ;)

Now here's some good advice for you. No one out there is "know it all". Apple eats its hat more often than it doesn't.
  • Samus - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

There is no "perfect size" just what is perfect for YOU as an individual.

A lot of people 3-4 years ago that didn't want a 4" iPhone and moved to a larger device actually moved BACK to the iPhone 6 (as seen by iPhone sales compared to competitor sales in the 4.7/5.5" market) but at the same time Apple alienated a lot of customers who were used to/valued the smaller devices.

Now they don't have all their eggs in one basket, they are in 3 baskets (4"/4.7"/5.5") which is ideal, because as the article states, this is the only powerful 4" phone available.

Apple knows what they are doing. They're not stupid, but they are often "behind" market trends because they like to get it right, and they don't like pushing unproven features, which is why NFC was delayed, Saphire was used for a camera lens before an entire display on the Apple Watch, Force Touch was on the Apple Watch before the iPhone, Touch ID was on the iPhone before the iPad, and wireless charging is still MIA...which is a real head scratcher because it is quite proven by now.

Apple isn't one to push the feature envelope, but they do push the technology envelope. Most of it is under the hood though. This is a stark contract to Samsung, who throws in EVERYTHING including the kitchen sink to see what sticks. A lot of it doesn't, which is why features has disappeared from recurring products. The only feature to actually disappear from iPhones has been...larger screens.

"The only feature to actually disappear from iPhones has been...larger screens."

Oh really? I'm pretty sure one of the very features you specific mentioned disappeared in the 6S... the sapphire camera cover. I think it was causing too many purple lens flairs so they switched to their ion glass for the camera cover in the 6S. The difference is obvious is obvious if you look at the cameras of the 6 and 6S side by side.
  • lilmoe - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

Just a little something I missed before clicking the submit button.

When Apple figures out new features or new market trends, they think really hard how they'd milk the crap out of their loyal consumers before adding those features. And when they do, they PR, media and marketing machines work really hard to make consumers more accepting to those money making decisions. Things consumers would normally not accept.

That's how you get these outrageous profits. Apple is second to none there, I'll give them that.

  • kmmatney - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

I briefly switched to Android when the 5s came out, wanting a mlarger screen. i bought an LG phone with a large screen and minimal bezel, and found it very annoying. Once you put a cover on it, it was very hard to hit the edge of the screen. Without a cover, the buttons would constantly press in my pocket. I think the bezel on the sides of the iPhone are ideal - you can have a thin cover, while still easily accessing the edge of the screen. They can probably cut the top bezel a little bit, the but bottom and sides are ideal, IMO.
  • lmcd - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

I never feel like I need to click there anymore. Seriously, some parts of the screen are essentially limited to information, and I love that change in smartphone app design. Devices that encourage it are appreciated.
  • Alexvrb - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

Don't pretty much all larger phones have a "one-handed" mode that moves everything down, effectively giving you the best of both worlds in a single device? Personally my only real issue with 5"+ devices is pocket real estate.
  • Valantar - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

This is not quite as cut and dry as that. The Sony Z5 Compact has a 4,6" display in a chassis very close in size to the 4" iPhones. Sure, it's a few mm wider, but it's far smaller than an iPhone 6/6s. It's perfectly usable with one hand. Then again, the Z compact range has been Sony's best selling phones (at least here in Norway), and for a reason. And their lack of any real presence in the US kills any chance of global relevance, of course.
  • lilmoe - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

    +1

Sony's Compact series are really great too. I just wish they'd use OLED already, or at least better IPS screens. The blacks on their LCDs are far too washed out.
  • shadarlo - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

Due to huge bezels an iPhone that is 1" smaller than an equally sized android is equally easy/hard to operate. It's amazing apple still hasn't found a way to shrink those bezels when everyone else in the industry figured it out years ago.

Cue 2 years from now when Apple releases a "zero bezel" iphone like it's a revelation.
  • protomech - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

Galaxy S7, which has a 5.1" screen and relatively thin bezels, is almost an inch taller, half an inch wider, and weighs about a third more than the iPhone SE.

The S7 is also thicker, wider, taller, and heavier than the 4.7" iPhone 6S which has similarly "huge" bezels.

iPhones do tend to have slightly thicker bezels than many Android flagships - and in particular the round Touch ID sensor takes up a lot of space - but it's not quite as drastic as you make it out to be.
  • retrospooty - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

"iPhones do tend to have slightly thicker bezels than many Android flagships" - Slightly? That is a drastic understatement. The point above is very valid. iPhones have always had massive bezels. The iPhone 6+ and S7 Edge both have 5.5 inch screens. The iPhone 6+ is 158.1 x 77.8 x 7.1 mm and the S7 Edge is 150.9 x 72.6 x 7.7 mm. That is almost a centimeter taller and 1/2 centimeter wider. That is pretty dramatic when you are referring to an already large device.
  • CaedenV - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

I know right? Everyone else has either gotten the buttons to be nice and small on the bottom of the phone, or else integrated the button onto the display. IPhone only has 1 button! Surely they could make it a bit shorter, or have it wrap around the bottom bezel of the device, or SOMETHING to reclaim some of that realestate and make it useful. The thing that really gets me is how comically large the top bezel is when there is essentially nothing up there... just for the sake of symmetry. At the very least they could reclaim that space with some front facing Beats speakers or something...

I have small hands. Use my 5.2" Sony Z2 one handed without an issue. To put it into perspective on how small my hands are, put your middle finger and thumb on a 12 oz Red Bull can and line them up together. I have an inch gap between my thumb and finger.

I think that's more a finger dexterity issue than a hand size issue when it comes to one handed operation. I grew up playing music instruments and am also a touch typer.
  • ummduh - Friday, March 25, 2016 - link

Meh, I have tiny hands too. I have to nearly always order in size small gloves, nobody stocks smalls anymore. I generally run phablets, and have a s6 right now.. But will be going back up to a 5.5"+ next time. I don't get why you'd punish yourself with a tiny smart phone..
  • Sexytimeturtle - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

For me a 4" screen is just fine. I'm a heavy phone user at home and for work and have no issue with the screen size. A 4" screen is still very easy to read and provides plenty of real estate imo. Also since I'm active and need a phone on me at all times I prefer something with a smaller foot print in my pocket especially in the summer time. I will be switching over to this from my 6 when my renewal comes around this fall. The 5 was the perfect phone size for me and I preferred the square sided chassis.
  • whiteiphoneproblems - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

Yeah, I'm seriously contemplating switching to this from my 6S -- while I love the larger screen size (after using a 5C for two years), the weight and "rounded/slippery" design of the 6S are driving me nuts. (I've tried 6 different cases, and they all have their own issues...)

  • Daniel Egger - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

Unfortunately that's not how it works. ;) I'd probably need to find someone entitled to a new phone who wasn't for some unknown reason not hit by the latest iPhone rain to swap it. Most likely it's much easier to just put the cash on the table and buy it privately (as I usually tend to do anyways).
  • kmmatney - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

Yeah - I have an iPhone 6S+, and while a like it most of the time (battery life is insane) I miss my iphone 5 at times (my son now has my iphone 5 and loves it). I've been tempted to buy another iphone 5 and switch my SIM card back and forth when I'm jogging, biking, or just want something smaller and lighter. The price of a used iphone 5 will probably drop a lot after these come out.
  • rm19 - Wednesday, March 23, 2016 - link

I don't know why everyone who prefers larger phones has to keep telling me what I should prefer. I loved my 4S and only recently went to a 6S for performance reasons. I want the smallest phone possible, but I just wish Apple would put a bit more effort into making a premium small phone because 4" screen with a tiny bezel and a fresh new design would be awesome. If it doesn't sell well, I'm sure they'll blame the size. Small shouldn't necessarily mean budget. I'll probably go for an SE.
  • MikhailT - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

I don't know about anyone else but for me, it's about the ability to use the phone with one hand.

Keep in mind that an iPhone 4" is much larger than the typical 4" non-iPhone device because of the fat bezels with Touch ID sensor. If you take an iPhone 6, reduce the bezels, remove the bottom chin with Touch ID and so on, the iPhone would feel more comfortable to use with one hand. That's why an Android device has a much higher screen to body ratio than iPhone of the same size, they don't require the home button and can put fingerscreen scanner on the side or the back.

  • flensr - Monday, March 21, 2016 - link

I want the 4" screen. Anything bigger and it won't fit in my pocket so I wouldn't carry it around with me. That's why I kept my iPhone 4 for so long, and why I replaced my iPhone 4 with an iPhone 5S instead of getting a 6. My wife likes the 6, and that's fine, but its far too big for my pockets. The 5S fits fine, although I did actually prefer the smaller iPhone 4. A thinner iPhone 4 would have been ideal for me. But this is ok and I might actually buy one since the lower price won't force me to skip a generation or two like I've had to do before.

That said I'm not going to be running out to replace my 6 month old phone, but I know plenty of people who are holding out with older 5 and 5s iPhones who didn't want a bigger phone.

The iPhone SE is niche in itself. But if Apple is trying to capture developing markets, I don't think it to be an ideal bet. I am from India and the pricing of some popular devices, all in INR:
    1) iPhone 5s 16 GB @ INR 18000
    2) Nexus 5X 16 GB @ INR 22000
    3) Moto X Style 16 GB @ INR 27000
    4) LG G4/ Galaxy S6/ iPhone 6 @ INR 33000
    5) Nexus 6P @ INR 39000
    7) iPhone 6s 16 GB @ INR 42000

Still too expensive for the Asian market to be honest. In India it is available for closer to 600 USD as opposed to 400, which beats the whole point of this phone.

Might do well in the US and Europe, especially with Women.

RAM is not mentioned at all?
  • serendip - Tuesday, March 22, 2016 - link

Too expensive for India due to import duties and all that. Funny that in China, the SE starts at RMB 3288 or USD 530 - a bit more expensive than US prices but still a lot cheaper than a 6S' starting price of RMB 5288.

And they're all made in China. Ah, the madness of global manufacturing and trade regulations. Contrast that with a Xiaomi's Mi 5 flagship which starts at RMB 1999.

Dafuq? The 4S is slow as hell running iOS 9 and the latest apps and games.
  • UtilityMax - Sunday, March 27, 2016 - link

Dude.. have you used a 4S recently? It got incredibly slow after the iOS 8 release. There are youtube videos showing anecdotal evidence that the older iPhone 4 running iOS 7 (the last supported iOS on that iPhone) is actually faster at most tasks than the iPhone 4S running iOS 8 or 9. And now, most people would agree that the iPhone 4 performance also sucks and they would have preferred if iPhone 4 did not get the iOS 7 even.

Anyways, considering this, it's an utter waste of money to buy a 4S for $200.. It was a solid phone, but very slow by now. For $200, you can now buy a very decent Android smartphone, and in fact there are several very good options: ASUS Zenfone 2/32GB, Motorola Moto G (16GB), or Huawei Honer 5X.

The old iPhone 5 and the iPhone 5S are actually still pretty usable in terms of performance, but in many cases those old phones have by now failing batteries or cracked screen glass, so a lot of the owners of those iPhone 5/5S as well as the older 4/4S should probably be interested in getting a $400 iPhone SE.
  • txmoney - Sunday, March 27, 2016 - link

I am interested in getting the SE not because I can't afford the iPhone 6/6S (I can) but because I genuinely prefer the smaller size. I own the iPhone 6 and with nearly two years of use, I never really liked the size. I will buy the SE and swap out the sim card from my 6. If the 7 turns out to be so much better (although I'm not thrilled with the lack of standard headphone jack that's rumored) I will get that too.

One of the reasons I went with the Moto G (3rd gen) was because it was a 5" display - which I find to be a decent size, but still easily much bigger than my original Moto X. The 5.9" of the new Moto X is just too huge for my pocket and one handed use.

I'd like to see more 5" (max) size phones with full features.

Yeah, this is about the iPhone, but just making a comment about how in Android- the drive to make bigger and bigger phones.
