I'm sure we're all following this announcement *very* closely. My opinion of Samsung is pretty low with all of their blatant Apple cloning, so I'm hoping this launch turns out to be the peak of this tablet's popularity...
Troll much? Samsung smart phones are out selling the iPhone. Apple has become a patent troll because they can't innovate fast enough to keep up. One of Apple's lawyers commented the other day that Apple can't keep up with Samsung, because they are releasing products so quickly. So, I don't think Samsung is going to mind too much what you think of them.
But if you want to get nick picky... The basic interfaces for phones and computers havent changed THAT much in the past 20 or so years, it's all icons, except for Windows Phone.
The phones and tablets themselves are all rectangles, you cant deviate from that.
iOS and Android both use a Linux/Unix based OS, it's not 100% built from the ground up.
So please, stop having a whinge about how someone is copying your favorite device, no one sane really cares that much as it's an inanimate object that would have no reprecussions on you if a competitor copies someone else device.
I would go find a bunch of pictures of rectangles on the internet and say "man Apple sure can innovate, what would we have done without the rectangle they invented!" but I am too lazy. Pretend that I did, and look in the mirror and laugh at yourself.
Copying appearance in a tech product is to me not even secondary but at the very bottom of the list - different tech, different hardware, different OS, and very little restrictions of use compared to Apple - all smartphones these days have a touchscreen interface, and neither is it an invention of Apple neither if it even was does it make any sense to halt someone else if he got the same functionality with their own tech ...
That's what litterally pisses me of about Apple - they are patenting functionality and more and more general uses and concepts and the goverments are letting them do it even though it doesn't make any sense whatsoever...
@chucknelson, regarding the Samsung store having "Apple" icons hanging on the wall...you might as well claim their aping Facebook or Gmail since those icons are on there too. Just because they're displaying a Safari icon? You can get that icon from the Windows desktop app. Samsung does sell PC hardware in addition to phones, mind you.
Um, if a company came along and tried to KIRF your *entire company* down to your stores, your IDE, etc, I think you'd be singing a different tune.
That this isn't obvious to everyone here just exposes how many Apple Haters there are. Logic goes right out the window when they're faced with the black and white of what Samsung has done.
It's not like Samsung hasn't had a history of this behavior. They did exactly the same thing to Sony when Sony was the company to beat in the CE industry.
They also did it to RIM, Samsung were taken to court over copying the Blackberry before the iPhone even existed.
Apple haters are so blinded though that they'll give Samsung, which has had a LONG history of copying and being sued as a result, a complete pass. Shameful.
Definitely an Apple hater here. Apple sheep are the most ignorant, condescending, and hilarious of all fanbois. The way I feel about Apple is similar to my feelings for Dave Matthews Band... 'Dave" fans are the worst, but the music would be ok if it weren't for the obnoxious fanbase. Apple crossed the line from a product I wasn't interested in because I didn't want to be part of the stereotype, to a company that is straight up evil, the second they sued HTC for "copying" the data tapping patent.
"Definitely an Apple hater here. Apple sheep are the most ignorant, condescending, and hilarious of all fanbois"
Exactly... They get all upset because Samsung copied Apple a few years ago. As if Apple doesnt copy others tech on a regular basis. As if Apple hasn't copied a TON of features from Android. As if todays Samsung smartphones arent better than the iPhone in just about every way.
Apple guys, seriously, take a close hard unfiltered look at the company you champion. It's really not worthy of your admiration. Nice products, yes at times, but the company is full of shit.
You know what else is hilarious? Denying yourself good products because you don't want to be associated with a stereotype or want to claim moral superiority.
"You know what else is hilarious? Denying yourself good products because you don't want to be associated with a stereotype or want to claim moral superiority."
That is hilarious in itself, however if you are implying that he (or anyone) is denying themselves good products by not going with the iPhone you are sadly mistaken and I suspect have not actually used an Android 4 class phone. The OS is better, more flexible, prettier and and faster than IOS. The hardware available on todays Android phones is far better as well if for nothing other than the screen size.
For tablets he is absolutely denying himself. Faster hardware, better displays, better applications, etc.
As for phones, if you want a larger screen then an Android phone is for you. Otherwise you're still sacrificing applications in a huge way, better vendor support, better OS support, etc. Speed is a moot point given that the 4S is still highly competitive, certainly faster than the majority of Android handsets out there (both due to hardware and the low number of JB devices), plus a new iPhone is less than a month away.
Agreed older ANdroid devices are lacking, but 4.1 rocks and updates are coming for most recent devices. I wouldnt worry about app support. With Android outselling Apple by more than 4 to 1 , the demand will drive the support. That 4 to 1 is with the admitted inferior Android 2.x. Now that 4.1 is out the gap will only get wider.
I like the simplicity of iOS devices since they're a cinch to support but I can't personally stand not having an accessible filesystem. What's the point of me typing up something on my iPad if I can't submit via my school's course management system because I need to attach it? No amount of hardware can fix what I consider is a glaring issue in iOS personally.
Whatever works for most people though, most people seem to buy tablets to just mess around and not get any work done.
Better applications on iOS is a toothless joke. For starters, apps on iOS can't do even remotely as much as apps on Android. For instance switching off Wi-Fi at night.
Android tablets allow you to slap on video in pretty much any format and just view it as is. Oh, and and wide aspect ratio of android tablets is also better suited for watching video.
Most allow you to use external flash cards, hassle free access to the content on your device.
You are one of the most ignorant people on the planet if you think there is any "logic" to your believe that Samsung has "kirf"ed Apple's entire company. You seriously need an education.
Well I for one had hi hopes for the Galaxy line. I'm no fan boy for Samsung or Apple so flaming me for what I'm about to say would just be wrong.
I just returned a Galaxy 3s because of very poor reception across the spectrum, bad 4g and bad wifi. I measured this against my old phone and a wifi connection on my notepad. Side by side the Galaxy was the worst, slipping in and out of the bare minimum of what would be considered any signal at all. This terrible reception happened on the first Galaxy 3 and the replacement unit my carrier sent. So guys this was no fluke. 2 Galaxies similar circumstances = poor/unusable reception.
Next we get to the ergonomic problems. The on/off fell right under my index finger or thumb depending on which hand held the phone. On a call I could turn the phone off in mid sentence. Great business impression that makes. Another ergonomic problem was, while talking, my cheek would dial away on the keypad. So picture it…..Talking to a customer, turning the phone off and on while randomly beeping away, oh yeah and poor reception.
I don’t get it, all this hype about Galaxy and its performance in the real world is a nightmare. Owning this phone set complicated my life not enabled it. What where all the reviewers thinking?
Does Samsung seriously expect to get any traction with a 10-inch tablet that only has 1280x800 resolution (the same as the much-smaller Nexus 7), when their Android competitors are doing 1920x1200 and Apple are hitting 2000x1500? Are they *trying* to fail?
I pressed a Samsung rep asking if it is a wacom digitizer and he stated he was not allowed to disclose the OEM of the digitzer except to say it has 1024 degrees of sensitivity and it is similar to the wacom tablets we are familiar with.
Slower hardware? The Exynos Quad is signficantly faster than the iPad's A5X. The GPU is not as fast, but for those of us that use our tablet for productivity or web browsing, that doesn't matter in the slightest; and even that slight amount is negated by the lower res display not needing as much GPU power anyway.
While I love the idea of the retina display, I see no difference at normal viewing distance between it at the 1200p displays, and very little vs the 800p displays. I can tell you from being on the salesfloor at an electronics store that most consumers don't see a difference either. 1200p sells tablets on the internet, but when confronted with choosing one over the other on display quality, people choose the iPad2 over the 'new' iPad, or the TF300 over the 700.
Productivity and web browsing are a wash between the two, benchmarks have shown this. They've also shown the massive gulf in GPU performance, so the A5X is a net win. The advantages of the retina display are obvious at normal viewing distances. Text in particular benefits huge, to say that it doesn't matter says more about someone's eyesight or standards than it does the quality of the device.
Yep. "inferior app library", merely 500 000+ apps that can do more than what iOS apps do. Who could get away with just half a million apps eh? I bet iOS has 550k apps, whopping 10% moar.
"Does Samsung seriously expect to get any traction with a 10-inch tablet that only has 1280x800 resolution (the same as the much-smaller Nexus 7), when their Android competitors are doing 1920x1200 and Apple are hitting 2000x1500? Are they *trying* to fail?"
This is more of an extension of the note line with higher res digitizer than any other tablets for people that need that type of detail. It's not a "tablet for the masses". 1280x800 is plenty for a 10 inch screen for most users. Its still better than the iPad 2. The only thing I would say is is should be cheaper based on the low res LCD specs. $399 max.
It does have the fastest CPU available today in the Exynos, but that is not enough to justify this at $499 vs. the other products available at the same price.
I bought a new tablet about 2 weeks ago. Compared Toshiba A series, Acer's (or Asus's, don't remember) thingie with high resolution and Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2.
And you know what? I went with Samsung. While additional resolution on AcerAsus was nice, otherwise screen was just vastly inferior to Samsungs. (contrast/ brightness / viewing angles, colors)
Hope you have some time to spend in NY to make it worth your while, Anand. Would hate to hear you had to go up and back in a day...for this.
Seriously, if they were priced the same, I would still be more interested in Surface than in the Note 10.1. But if the reports going around yesterday are true, that Surface will start at $199, I couldn't see anyone going for this over Surface, Nexus 7, or the equally priced Transformer Pad Infinity. Would have to be a Sammy fan, I think. The S-Pen doesn't make enough of a difference to compensate for better priced, or better paneled, competitors. I don't mind hype if the product can live up to it, but I dislike over-hyped, under-whelming products.
Samsung needs to realize the smartphone market is not the same as the tablet one.
While Samsung can sell many S2 and S3 phones, their tablets won't sell anywhere close.
The problem with their tablet is the whole Android experience is just unpolished. I can use an Android phone with stock apps without too much problems. With the tablet I have to use both stock and non-stock apps and that's where the problem starts.
The S-pen is nothing new, it's like the PalmPilot. The software I've seen so far that uses the S-pen are not impressive which can be accomplished on any tablet with a decent stylus. The senstivity level they're touting can be emulated through software easily on iOS or Android.
They are trying to price this at Apple new iPad price is a huge mistake. This thing can't be more than $399 new or else it's fail.
"The Galaxy Note 10.1 ships with Ice Cream Sandwich, but a Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) upgrade is coming later this year."
Samsung has done a fantastic job copying Apple all except on the software upgrade cycle. There are far too many Samsung phones, tablets that still don't have ICS, I'm sure this version of the Note will not have it either.
I'm guessing JB will arrive on a new Note 10.1 model (to further confuse us) which will probably also sport the higher res screen.
Agreed. I would not be shocked AT ALL to see a 1200p Note 10.1 this Christmas with a JB update coming for the 800p model sometime after the first of the year.

Faster CPU/GPUs does not an iPad make. Apple is still in a league of its own. A slick class-leading OS with loads of great software that works well with the beautifully designed class-leading hardware and is upgraded with great new features regularly and easily all the while integrating tightly with the whole Apple eco system.
Good luck waiting on the ICS upgrade. And if miraculously it ever happens you can bet it will be the last.
With Samsung, like so many other iPad wannabes, you feel outdated within months of owning it and it won't be long before it finds its way to the trash heap along with the rest.
