Logitech doesn't always do everything perfectly, but when they do, it is glorious.
  • ImSpartacus - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

Yeah, the first anywhere was nearly perfect. This seems to be an improvement.
  • Solandri - Sunday, December 20, 2015 - link

It was nearly perfect, then they took a step backwards. The pic shows the original Anywhere Mouse MX with the matte surface. About the 2nd year it was in production, they switched to a glossy surface which was terrible. It made my hand feel like it was sticking to it, and the slightest bit a grease made it slippery. The matte surface could absorb some grease before it got slippery enough to need wiping. I'm glad to see they reverted to the matte surface.

One oddity I've noticed with the DarkField sensor is that it has problems tracking on cardboard.
  • theduckofdeath - Tuesday, December 22, 2015 - link

It was a great mouse for its size, but far from perfect. The tracking was kind of slow compared to a wired mouse or even one of the bigger MX mice.
  • ddriver - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

Their quality to cost ratio is rather poor. Absolutely speaking their products are relatively good to most of the cheap trash on the market, but at those prices it looks kind of bad. For example, one would expect a 60$ logitech mouse to last at least as long as a 20$ microsoft mouse if not outlast it, yet it died in 1/4 of the time. This does not impress.
  • Samus - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

I agree Logitech quality is crap compared to the days of the original MX-series mice and di Novo products, but that doesn't mean they aren't innovative.

Like Lenovo, though, I wish the quality would come back. But it's a sign of the times...everything is made to be disposable. Planned obsolescence.
  • Byte - Friday, December 18, 2015 - link

They really need to bring back the original MX Revolution design! I'm still using mine!
  • lefty2 - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

yeah, in particular the micro switches in the buttons wear out very quickly. in fairness, though their tech support is very good. they'll mail you out a free replacement if its in warrenty
  • ddriver - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

Yes, the majority of the issues I've had with logitech products were related to the switches. Usually this manifests as ghosts clicks or the inability to click and drag, select text or use lasso selections.

And it is not clear whether it is a problem with the switches or with the mouse mechanics failing to operate the switches as the issues can usually be resolved by gluing a thin plastic film on the notches which press the switches. The issue might as well be wear of switches, wear of the button mechanics or even both. The film solution works but it is a clumsy and ugly workaround for a problem which should not exist to begin with. Most people would throw the product right away, but as a tinkerer I rarely throw anything away before I attempt to figure out what is wrong and how to fix it.
  • Ar7y - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

Oh, those micro-switches! I have a VX Nano from 2007 that I've never had any problems with.

I bought an MX Anywhere a couple of years ago to pair with another PC and this past year it started exhibiting the same problems you described. I was able to successfully dismantle the mouse and offending micro-switch, and bend the internal spring mechanism to get it working normal again. That was six months or so ago, and it's still working.
  • toyotabedzrock - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

OK so its not just my lazy fingers then. I have found unplugging the receiver and waiting a few seconds can fix switch issues.
  • fmcjw - Friday, December 18, 2015 - link

speaking of warranty, this review fails to mention the 1 year warranty, which is an important purchase consideration. In fact, all new Logitech mice/kb models now carry one year warranties... grab the old models while they last.
  • plonk420 - Friday, December 18, 2015 - link

some credit cards extend the warranty by a year...
  • SlyNine - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

Pulling rate? I imagine 60, but if it were 120 that would be great for gaming on the go. Also what about idle/wake latency? How long for this mouse to go in to sleep mode?

I know this is not a gaming mouse, but that doesn't mean it can't be decent at gaming.
  • SlyNine - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

    polling...
  • bminor13 - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

I think you're mixing up mouse polling rates with monitor refresh rates. Most mice poll at 100-125 Hz, and gaming mice tend to allow you to set the polling rate up to 1000Hz.
  • SlyNine - Saturday, December 19, 2015 - link

True, but as a mobile mouse I figured it'd be turned down to save battery life. Mice used to run at 60hz standard. Looked it up, the first gen version ran 125hz this one probably does as well.
  • Teqonix - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

One clarification question - does the scroll wheel act as the middle mouse button, or does it switch between hyperscroll and click scrolling, still?

I use the middle mouse button all the time in my job, and having the scroll wheel not be the middle mouse button was a deal killer for me, which is why I got the MX Master.
  • Colin1497 - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

If it's like my first gen, it's programmable through their setpoint software.
  • Nintendo Maniac 64 - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

He may not be able to install SetPoint at work though.
  • edzieba - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

You can see in the Logitech Options screenshot that configuring the middle mouse button is not an option. You can only assign the 'gesture button' to use as a middle button instead.

Logitech have been doing this for their last few revisions of portable mice, and it's an absolutely moronic decision.
  • Samus - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

The irony is if you DON'T install SetPoint, the middle button actually acts as a middle button.

I wonder if there is a reghack to disable SetPoint from forcing the middle button to gesture?
  • rkcth - Friday, December 18, 2015 - link

There is a small button behind the scroll wheel which acts like a middle mouse button. I use it all the time.
  • mathew7 - Monday, February 8, 2016 - link

The scroll wheel "button" is a mechanical change between hyperscroll and normal scroll. Middle click is the extra button behind the wheel. MX Masters has electronic switching and you can reassign the wheel button to something else, but NOT ON MX Anywhere 2. With MX Masters you can even activate hyperscrolling with a threshold: if you scroll fast enough, it automatically activates hyperscrolling (configurable threshold).
  • Samus - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

I think if you click it softly its a middle button and if you click it hard it changes the scroll bearing from glide or steps.
  • JoshUpstein - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

Does the mouse software need to stay installed for the customization to work? How "heavy" is it in Windows? Does it require startup entries?
  • Samus - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

I never install Logitech or Microsoft (or SteelSeries for that matter) software if I can avoid it. Most of the stuff works better with Windows handling it.
  • Colin1497 - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

I have a trusty first gen one, and this looks like a solid upgrade worthy of my briefcase. Thanks for the great review.
  • TEAMSWITCHER - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

I'm gonna get a ton of crap for this, but here it goes... On my Mac I have a Magic Mouse. The ergonomics aren't the best, but the momentum scrolling is simply incredible. Now, whenever I use a wheel mouse, it feels awkward as all hell - a limited experience.
  • erple2 - Sunday, December 20, 2015 - link

That's a feature of osx, not the magic mouse. The scroll wheel itself doesn't negate that per se. Also, on a Mac, I've sadly come to prefer the trackpad instead.
  • erple2 - Sunday, December 20, 2015 - link

Sorry, that should have been "software", not osx above.
  • megadirk - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

I own two of the original Anywhere mice, if the new models have improved in anyway I wouldn't hesitate to buy one. I love the originals.
  • MattCoz - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

Looks the same size, so should fit in the previous version's pouch. My old one has button issues, so I may consider upgrading.
  • MattCoz - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

Yikes, I don't remember the original being this expensive.
  • nikon133 - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

Being left-handed... I "love" when they make basically symmetrical mouse... and then add side buttons only for right hand.

I can understand fully-right-hand-shaped units... they feel nice in correct hand... but this one cries to be ambidextrous...
  • Kvaern2 - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

Does this have the same Windows 10 BT driver issue as the MX 5000 set?
  • SteelRing - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

I disagree with rechargeable strategy, you now have 3 items to keep track instead of 2 (mouse and receiver). Sure cable is ubiquitous or whatnot, but I'd prefer my mouse not to have to depend on it. Lock and load some AAA and you're done for the next few months, and if it's anything like the marathon mouse I rarely ran out before a year is up.
  • Impulses - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

AAAs can give you back a full charge with a simple swap too, and it means the mouse doesn't become disposable the second the internal battery starts faltering... That being said, BT will overrule all that for many. I'll stick with the original until I really need the BT.
  • Impulses - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

Maybe I'm biased towards AAAs since I travel with a mini Eneloop USB charger, which I need to use for my keychain flashlight and camera flash...

I can see how it'd be a nuisance if one no longer uses AA/AAAs for anything tho. Specially if one carries alkalines that can leak in storage instead of LSD NiMHs.
  • ajp_anton - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

Well, I always have a micro-USB cable with me anyway to charge my phone if needed. What if you don't carry AAA's? Either they up the number of items to keep track on, or you have to go and buy them.
I'm assuming you can use the mouse while it's charging from the laptop you're using it with.
  • BurntMyBacon - Tuesday, December 22, 2015 - link

@SteelRing: "I disagree with rechargeable strategy, you now have 3 items to keep track instead of 2 (mouse and receiver)."

I disagree. It's three items vs three items.

@SteelRing: "Lock and load some AAA and you're done for the next few months"

Errr, it looks like you agree with me on that third item. You are basically just swapping out batteries for a cable. Given both go ~2 months, you could leave the cable at home and charge it about as often as you would replace the batteries. Then it is 2 vs 2. Instant recharge of the battery replacement is made a little less meaningful by the 1 minute - 1 hour charge to use ratio of the new mouse.

The bigger issue in my mind is that the older version had an internal storage for the receiver. The new one apparently does not. Very easy to loose, especially when it doesn't include a travel pouch like the old one.
  • noeldillabough - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

Been using this since it first came out (many months ago) and used the original Anywhere too, loved them both and couldn't actually live without this. The fact I can pair it with my macbook and put the USB into my windows box makes it extra useful. For some reason they stopped the travel case so I just used the old one (fits perfect).
  • pixelstuff - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

"... this mouse is likely the travel mouse to beat. "

Are you sure the M535 doesn't beat it? For a travel mouse it seems like having the option of a AA battery would be really nice.

I wrote to Logitech not long after the Anywhere Mouse was released asking why they had so few Bluetooth options and some of those were even quirky designs. I suggested they take the exact design of the Anywhere Mouse and make it Bluetooth. Glad they listened except I'm kind of disappointed they discarded the AA battery option and as this article pointed out, removed the big switch on bottom.

I had assumed they needed more power for Bluetooth or something, but along comes the M535 with a single AA battery and months of expected life.
  • ajp_anton - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

Something I just realized from the picture of the receiver... What happens to those tiny wireless USB receivers when type-C becomes common? How much of the hardware is actually inside the type-A connector?
  • toyotabedzrock - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

I have the first model and it actually won't track on a solid dark blue quilt I bought.

Would this mouse pair with a Nexus player or a Nexus phone/tablet?
  • zeeBomb - Thursday, December 17, 2015 - link

Holy bonkers this mouse. Just like the MX master, this too is aesthetically beautiful.
  • mathew7 - Friday, December 18, 2015 - link

I've been using one since August (I actually bough ax MX Masters in July cause this one was not yet available). When I travel, I usually take my tablet, laptop and HDMI stick. It's great to have a single mouse for all of them and quickly switch which one to control.
I recently bought the cheaper K380 keyboard with similar technology. Similar because it's only bluetooth. It's a bummer, since for an enthusiast like me, the unifying receiver support would better be suited for keyboards (e.g. when something goes wrong and BIOS/UEFI configuration is needed, just plug in the receiver). This is what prevented me from buying the K810 back in July.

    Left-Handers left out again

It simply isn't worth the money and the moment we realise this the price will fall.
